Instead of allowing conditioned indoor air to be exhausted directly outdoors, the concept guides that air to the intake side of the outdoor unit before it leaves the building.

In heating mode, the outdoor unit can benefit from warmer indoor exhaust air.
In cooling mode, it can benefit from cooler indoor exhaust air.

Simple retrofit concept

The solution is designed to work with an existing suitable split air-conditioning or air-source heat-pump installation.

In a typical installation:

indoor air → short wall duct → outdoor unit intake area

The concept normally requires:

• no refrigerant-system modifications
• no changes to heat-pump electronics
• no software changes
• no modification of the compressor

The exact installation depends on the building, wall construction and outdoor-unit location.

Heating and cooling

The same basic principle can provide a temperature advantage in both heating and cooling conditions.

Heating: warmer indoor exhaust air can improve the temperature conditions seen by the outdoor unit.

Cooling: cooler indoor exhaust air can improve the conditions under which the outdoor unit rejects heat.

The colder — or hotter — the climate, the greater the temperature advantage.

The concept of this heat pump energy saving solution has been used in demanding Finnish winter conditions for more than 10 years.

Long-term field experience has shown that using warmer exhaust air can also significantly reduce ice accumulation beneath the outdoor unit under suitable operating conditions.
